The United Methodist Church and LGBTQ Equality.

Given today’s vote from the UMC Special Conference, I can no longer call myself a Methodist. In solidarity with LGBTQ people, I am seeking a new churh home.

I know there are faithful Methodists fighting to reform the church. I love & appriciate those people. But, that is not my calling. As laity, I will support and be a part of a denomination that recognizes the full dignity and humanity of all sexual orientations and gender identites.

@mike I grew up in the UMC as a child but left the denomination nearly two decades ago. My heart is breaking.

@mike The ELCA loves everyone. I think you’d like it there. We’re a pretty eclectic bunch. Also sad to see the UMC take a step backwards.

@Matthew_White I speak at a lot of ELCA churches and have always had good experiecnes there.

@mike ELCA pastors helped me reconstruct after evangelicalism left me high and dry. Several of my most favorite people are in that denomination. If you joined up, I could add another favorite person to that list. 😜

@Matthew_White @mike The Other Matt took the words right out of my mouth. This is so heartbreaking and disappointing for the UMC, and I pray that those congregations that are fully inclusive will find a way forward. In the meantime, the ELCA is here, with arms wide open.

@mike Considering what has happened the last 4 days, that is very gracious response. I am praying about my path as UM clergy and the families I serve. What is the best way to show love and honor the dignity of the LGBTQ community.

My heart breaks for friends and others who were hoping this decision would bring change and equality.

@mike I'm so heartbroken for all my methodist friends. My heart goes out to all of you, especially the queer members of the church!

@mike
Last week I came to the same conclusion. So on Sunday I met for the first time with a young, LGBTQ affirming community. Hope to see more of them.

@mike Have you visited any Episcopal churches? It’s where we landed after our local non-affirming PC-USA church left the denomination. We tried to stick it out and change from within, but it’s hard to right a sinking ship, so we jumped.

It’s been healing to worship alongside and under the leadership of LGBTQ people in our small town in Arkansas. Methodists and Episcopalians are cousins...sort of.

Much love to all who are hurt by today’s vote.

@mike The Episcopal Church would welcome you! I go to All Saints in Pasadena and it's a really vivid, thriving, affirming community.

The United Methodist Church and LGBTQ Equality.

@brady I’ve been to All Saints many times, and I’ll be there on Sunday morning.

@mike Episcopalian, UCC, and Unity are good places

@mike lots of open and welcoming churches in the ELCA ... don't let the "E" scare you off!

The United Methodist Church and LGBTQ Equality.

@mike I honour your support and I’m also sorry you have lost your church.

The United Methodist Church and LGBTQ Equality.

@mike we’ll keep fighting Mike. Do what you need to for yourself and the people you love.

The United Methodist Church and LGBTQ Equality.

@mike thank you for your solidarity with all LGBTQ people. As a UCC minister who shared a seminary campus and classes with UMC friends and colleagues I am so heartbroken for them. I grew up Lutheran and evangelical and today this brings back so many triggering to me.

@mike Really sorry to hear this. Having to switch church communities again? That sucks 😢

The United Methodist Church and LGBTQ Equality.

@mike I'm usually not that open about being bi, but your decision means a lot to me. Thank you!

@mike mood.

The United Methodist Church and LGBTQ Equality.

@mike I was thinking about you the last few days as the conference met. My husband and his kids attend our eclectic nondenom church as well as a UMC his parents attend. Our 13 yo just started confirmation last Sunday. Last night we entertained the idea of removing him from confirmation (with his consent) due to the vote. It’s heartbreaking. I know several LGBTQ UMC clergy and allies who are overwhelmed with grief. I stand with them as a loving ally.

@mike How a Protestant who hosts a show called “The Liturgists” isn’t yet an Episcopalian, I don’t know.

The United Methodist Church and LGBTQ Equality.

@mike, I found a home in the UMC when I first left the Catholic Church. Even though I’m not Methodist currently, this feels personal. I saw people I know via music ministry speak and advocate during the conference, and I can hardly stand their pain... which means they themselves must feel much worse, which is unconscionable in the immediate and in the long term.

@mike also, You might appreciate these two podcast episodes, which brought me some hope. I am truly sorry for your loss, and the loss felt by so many UMC people I love and admire.

@mike There may be many clergy (like myself) and laity who are feeling the same thing. The coming days, weeks, and months will be hard. Any word from the beloved Pastor Betsy?

The United Methodist Church and LGBTQ Equality.

@mike The Episcopal church welcomes you. That's what the signs always say, and we really mean it. You and everyone. Big tent; lots of liturgy : )

@mike catching up on here after some time away with a crazy month... so sorry to hear this, but glad you’re making the healthy choice to move away and stand firm for inclusion and the open table!
