Another poem from "the mermaid's voice returns in this one" by amanda lovelace

a victim

or a survivor?

a victim

or a survivor?

a victim

or a survivor?

- i have settled on both

I like that a lot. People tend to shame victims. It's treated like it's a dirty word and a moral failing. A survivor then becomes someone who has overcome and triumphed over their pain and experience.

The story is only acceptable when it comes wrapped and tied with a neat little bow, palatable to its audience.

Life doesn't work that way. "Survivor" simply reflects the reality that I'm alive. Sometimes that was nothing more than luck and the right person at the right time. I have no more moral strength or standing than those who didn't.

"Victim" simply speaks truth in the proper perspective. No other word suffices.

I, too, have settled on both.
